Over 100,000 girls aged 12-17 are victims of child sex-trafficking and/or sexual exploitation in the Philippines every single year. GirlsGotThis is an action-led movement to protect girls by using the power of play; creating community safe-spaces to protect and provide equitable participation for girls and to capacitate teachers and communities to identify and report signs of abuses. We are #StandingWithGirls by harnessing the power of sport to unleash the potential of girls!
Despite a growing economy, the Philippines has the highest rate of poverty and inequality across Asia. The country also has one of the highest rates of sex trafficking and forced prostitution for girls who live in poverty. For girls who are born into poverty, they do not have access to quality education as schools are often underfunded and classroom sizes can reach up to 100 students. Because of this, many girls often drop out of school and risk becoming victims of sex-trafficking.
The project helps to protect girls through four simple but highly critical steps; Step 1 - SAFE-SPACES - Access to regular safe-space and play-based learning to build confidence, self-belief and acquire knowledge of rights Step 2 - KEEPING THEM IN SCHOOL - Teaming up with teachers to keep girls in school and build reporting mechanisms Step 3 - PEER MENTORS - Connecting girls with local mentors to guide and help them Step 4 - DIGNIFIED OPPORTUNITY in education and employment.
GirlsGotThis provides a long term, preventive and sustainable approach to tackling the issue of child abuse. It works with communities to invest in girls' education and keep them safe. The model of using a play-based intervention to protect girls has been recognized for its effective approach, winning awards for both social impact and educational innovation through sports.
Amidst a global water crisis spanning continents, WAFA has a vision: unearth transformative, low-tech solutions from communities, propelling WAFA's winners and finalists into the limelight for the support they deserve. Together, we're not only ensuring access to vital resources but also catalyzing a ripple effect of change, empowering communities, and heralding a future where water is a right, not a privilege.
There's nothing more essential to life on earth than water. Yet, from sub-Saharan Africa to Asia's teeming megacities, there's a global water crisis. People are struggling to access the quantity and quality of water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing, handwashing, and growing their food. Without clean, easily accessible water, families and communities are locked in poverty for generations. Children drop out of school and parents struggle to make a living.
WAFA working to contribute to creating an awareness of the change we need to make to give water to all. Our mission is to identify communities offering low-tech, high-impact solutions and to bring them to public and professional attention so that they can attract support.
As a result of the unprecedented exposure, the projects that were unable to take off due to a lack of resources will have time to scale up and replicate. With these sustainable solutions, people will have access to clean water and can practice good hygiene and sanitation. Eventually, WAFA award winners and aspirants will also follow it to their benefit, and this will help in spreading solutions.
Hidden Girls is a project that we have created especially for girls that are victim of physical and/or sexual violence. We focus on girls that live in safe houses, these shelters are based on secret locations. Our female coaches offer a trauma relief movement program in the form of weekly dance and sports trainings sessions. We developed this program in collaboration with trauma specialists to have more impact on the trauma relief.
Girls that are victim of sexual and domestic violence seek safety in shelters, but because of their safety they got limited in their freedom. Often these hidden shelters in The Netherlands has no space to do sports or dance.
We think it's necessary for these girls to get inspired by our coaches, to move and to get uplifted by our dance and sports coaches. Movement helps them when they suffer from their traumas.
We stimulate the process of trauma relief on a physical level by our dance and sports program. The weekly exercises are created with the help from a team of trauma specialists.
